The 2K22 Tunguska is a highly advanced Soviet/Russian self-propelled anti-aircraft weapon system that first entered service in 1982. It was designed to provide mobile air defense for armored units and to replace the older ZSU-23-4 Shilka. The Tunguska is armed with two main weapon systems: eight 9M311 surface-to-air missiles for long-range targets and twin 30mm 2A38M autocannons for close-range engagements. The system is mounted on a tracked chassis, allowing it to move with armored columns, and it can engage targets while on the move. The Tunguska is equipped with radar and optical targeting systems, giving it the capability to operate in all weather conditions, day or night.
The vehicle’s missile system has a maximum range of about 10 km and can reach altitudes of up to 3.5 km. The autocannons have a high rate of fire, providing effective coverage against low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and even some types of ground targets. The Tunguska is fully amphibious, has a crew of four, and can travel at speeds of up to 65 km/h on roads. It has been modernized over the years, with versions like the Tunguska-M1, which includes improved electronics and enhanced missile performance. The Tunguska has seen service in various conflicts and remains in use by the Russian military and other countries.
